Exercise Stress Test: What Can It Detect That We Cannot See at Rest?
We may feel perfectly fine while sitting, working or resting. However, our heart does not behave in the same way at rest as it does during physical exercise. During exertion, the body needs more oxygen, heart rate increases and the cardiovascular system must adapt to greater demand.
We may feel perfectly fine while sitting, working or resting. However, our heart does not behave in the same way at rest as it does during physical exercise. During exertion, the body needs more oxygen, heart rate increases and the cardiovascular system must adapt to greater demand. ergometry, allows us to study how the heart responds as the intensity of physical activity progressively increases.
What Can an Exercise Stress Test Detect?
During an exercise stress test, the patient exercises, usually on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, while the medical team monitors their electrocardiogram, heart rate, blood pressure and any symptoms that may occur.
This assessment can help identify certain heart rhythm abnormalities that occur during exertion, abnormal blood pressure responses or electrocardiographic changes that, in the appropriate clinical context, may suggest reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.
It also allows functional capacity and exercise tolerance to be assessed, providing useful information for diagnosis, follow-up and physical activity planning.
It is important to remember that a normal exercise stress test does not rule out all cardiovascular diseases. Its usefulness and limitations depend on each patient and the reason for performing the test.
When Is an Exercise Stress Test Recommended?
Not everyone needs an exercise stress test before practising sports. However, it may be indicated when exercise-related symptoms occur, such as chest pain, disproportionate shortness of breath, certain palpitations or an unexplained reduction in physical capacity.
It may also be part of the assessment of people with known cardiovascular diseases, certain patients with risk factors and athletes who require a specialised evaluation before undertaking certain physically demanding activities.
The decision to perform the test should be made by a healthcare professional after assessing the patient's medical history, symptoms and individual cardiovascular risk.
